Sometimes a little research news is enough to instill unnecessary anxiety. When you already cope with chronic pain and struggle to maintain your migraine treatment regimen, the last thing you need to do is read headache triggering news stories. But if you take it all in stride, and stay the course with your medication and drug free migraine therapies, things should work out just fine. The latest medical news about a subject group from Iceland, reports that certain migraine sufferers may be at a slightly elevated risk for developing Parkinson’s disease later in life.

In a study recently published online in the journal Neurology scientists found that middle-aged people with migraine preceded by aura were more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease when they became older. Aura may involve visual disturbances or light sensitivity before the onset of a migraine.

Prior studies have made a connection between migraines, restless leg syndrome and Parkinson’s due to the fact they involve a dysfunction of the brain chemical dopamine, a neurotransmitter. According to Reuters Health report about the research, the lead author speculated the results might also have something to do with genetic predisposition or even migraine related head injuries that in turn heighten the risk for Parkinson’s.

If you have a family history of Parkinson’s disease and also suffer with migraines accompanied by aura, don’t hesitate to ask you doctor about what this means for you. Despite the noteworthy results from this latest research news, you should keep in mind that staying on track with your migraine treatment is important. Drug free migraine therapies like trigger avoidance, or a migraine procedure may put an end to your suffering.

Reuters reported the lead researcher noted, “This definitely should not alarm people.” She added, “even though the risk was doubled, it was still uncommon, so people should not be unduly concerned.” This important reassurance from the headache expert should also ease any possible lingering apprehension.
