Menopause and Migraines: Treatment Eases Misery

The last thing a woman needs to hear in the throes of hot flashes, agitated sleep, emotional turmoil and migraines, is “it’s all in your head.” According to a recent headache research study, there could be some truth to this assertion. Hormones and headaches are widely believed to share a connection. This latest medical information suggests that migraine treatment should be considered together with menopause-related symptom relief.

Headache experts recently presented the findings from this research at the 56th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Headache Society. They discovered that migraines occur more often among women experiencing peri-menopause and menopause than among women in the pre-menopause category.

Peri-menopause signals a period of time when estrogen levels fluctuate, and precedes menopause when estrogen levels fall and menstruation ceases. Data was reviewed on 3,603 women with an average age of 45. Among the group, 34 per cent of the subjects were pre-menopausal, 30 per cent were menopausal and 35 per cent were peri-menopausal.

About 12 per cent each of the peri-menopausal and menopausal groups reported more frequent migraines, compared with only 8 per cent of the pre-menopausal women. The researchers indicated they hoped these findings would spur more interest in developing migraine treatments for these hormone-triggered migraines.

Despite this news, every woman should know that she no longer has to hopelessly endure menopausal misery and migraines.
