Earthy Drug-Free Migraine Remedies

EarthyChronicMigraines As we celebrate Earth Day on April 22,  it seems like an appropriate time to check out some ‘earthy’ drug free migraine therapies.  Chronic headache and migraine sufferers are always on the lookout for treatment alternatives to pain medications.  After all, living on drugs is not as nature intended; so if there is an alternative to be found in nature, many folks prefer to choose this remedy when possible.  So what are some of the popular ‘earthy’ headache and migraine therapies that appeal to the naturalists?

  • Ginger- this tropical root, found beneath purple and green flowers, is known for its anti-inflammatory as well as anti-nausea properties, giving it a double-duty thumbs-up as a drug free migraine remedy. Boil some in water for a soothing tea, chew on a raw chunk, or grind some up in your juice smoothie.
  • Peppermint- the oil extracted from this herb can be added as a flavoring to food, rubbed along the temples and hairline at the headache location, or simply inhaled for soothing relief. Anecdotal evidence of this herb’s soothing properties goes back for centuries.
  • Feverfew- according to, feverfew tea can act as a vasodilator when blood vessels contract during a migraine. This helps ease muscular spasms and irritation. The herb consists of leaves, flowers, and stems of the Chrysanthemum parthenium.
  • Butterbur- this herb originates from the leaves of the Butterbur shrub and is believed to reduce muscular spasms that can trigger migraines and inflammation. It is known to be a toxic herb, and may only be consumed in processed form.
  • Valerian-the roots and stems of this herb are believed to promote calm, relaxation and even sleep. For migraine sufferers, this supplement is believed to help ease symptoms.

Certain herbs are better for certain types of headache and other symptoms. For example, ginger and peppermint are both preferred for tension type chronic headaches, while Feverfew is taken for migraines, according to   All of these herbs are believed to contain certain substances that can help ease pain, inflammation and other symptoms like nausea.  However, it’s very important to understand that just like pharmaceutical drugs, they also present the risk for serious side effects.  They can even be dangerous for certain individuals, and may also produce adverse interactions with ongoing medication regimens.
