Apparently, migraine sufferers are taking their pain to the internet in real time, and not only is this helping them cope with their condition, but it may also be helping medical researchers make progress in developing new migraine treatments. According to a news report on Medical News Today, migraineurs are expressing their symptoms on social media site Twitter, and these tweets are providing valuable scientific research data.
Seeking richer data about migraine attacks from sufferers; researchers from the School of Dentistry at the University of Michigan were not satisfied with relying on retrospective self-reported information about migraine attacks. Elapsed time from the headache episodes and skewed memory after all, are likely to alter the results.
They discovered that by tracking social media expressions of migraine misery, they were able to access the users’ experiences in real time. The researchers screened out approximately 35 per cent of tweets, as they were not from true migraine sufferers, but included communications that were metaphoric (“my family reunion is turning into a major migraine”); advertising; retweets and discussions. Of the remaining migraine tweets, they found that 74 per cent were from women and mostly occurred on Monday mornings.
